Visit a real winter wonderland in Sicily with Premier Villas

The Etna landscape, volcanic rocks and grass

Etna Landscape

In the last Premier Villas Italy blog I was singing the praises of a leisurely stroll down the
Via San Gregorio Armeno in Naples
, which should be overflowing with Christmas festive wares by now, and this time I’ve got another wonderful walk for you – up Mount Etna in Sicily.

OK, there will be fewer opportunities to pick something up for your Christmas tree, but Mount Etna is stunning in winter, in particular if it snows and there’s a chance to strap on the skis and explore the truly breathtaking volcanic scenery. The mixture of gentle slopes and large bumps created by the lava make it as much fun for the novice as the seasoned skier or snowboarder.

Of course, you don’t have to walk (or ski) on Etna. Whether you drive yourself or take advantage of an organised tour, just getting the funicular to the top of the volcano is an amazing experience in itself, especially if it’s a clear day. If the clouds are nowhere to be seen once you reach the top, the Ionian, Adriatic and Mediterranean seas will all be sparkling in the distance.

The town of Catania on the east coast of Sicily is a good base for exploring Mount Etna. This luxury villa has panoramic views of the Sicilian countryside and is a stone’s throw from the lava-covered slopes. This premier villa is just as close, situated in Trecastagni, a beautiful village situated to the south. It is perfect for relaxing after a long day of volcanic adventures, which is also a good excuse for a slab of sfincione and some cannoli washed down with a glass of Marsala or two.
