Well, not really undiscovered, but it certainly is a jewel though, and one that benefits from its anonymity. Kaş is where spectacular rocky hillsides join in harmony with the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Two and a half hours east of Dalaman (30 minutes east of Kalkan), the region’s crystal clear water and small white beaches call to visitors interested in world-class diving, boating, nature or simply soaking in the rays. This pretty seaside town seems to retain a certain calm, maybe due to the fact that not so long ago it was only accessible by horse or boat.
Those interested in history can rediscover the mysterious sunken city, Lycian tombs, an ancient shipwreck, the still used Greek amphitheatre, and more. In the centre of town lies its historic symbol: Antiphellos – a five-meter tall rock-carved Lycian sarcophagus dating from the 4th century BC. Stroll around the town’s attractions and charming shops during the day, and have enjoyable nightlife after the sun goes down. A range of restaurants and bars are within seconds of one another and the promenade by the old harbour is idyllic. Villa T2019 is perfectly situated for all your excursions.
Kaş has become a centre for water sports, especially snorkelling and scuba diving. There are several scuba diving schools in the area, with visits to many ancient sunken ships. One of the most important underwater archaeological sites in the world is found here, the wreck of a 14th century BC Egyptian vessel.
Easily reached by boat just east of Kaş, and visible from Kaş peninsular where villas T2001 and T2002 lay, is the small island of Kekova and the ruins of an ancient submerged city. This is an area of fascinating islands, bays, and ancient cities. Apollonia, the sunken ancient city lies along the shore of the island. An earthquake during the 2nd century AD destroyed the city and submerged part of it, creating a surreal half-above water, half-underwater snapshot in time. Boat tours to this tranquil island usually include stops for swimming. On the mainland side of Kekova there is the blissfully quiet fishing village of Ucagiz – which is difficult to get to except by boat, but well worth it.
We absolutely love Kaş, and it’s just a short drive from Kalkan where we also have a huge selection of outstanding villas to use as your base camp.
By the way, we keep going on about off-season breaks in the south of Turkey, here’s why… It’s mid November and still above twenty degrees in Kalkan and Kaş! Coming for a swim…?
