Discover Maremma and the Super Tuscans with Premier Villas

What do you think of when you think of Italy? Well, for me it’s wine. Late summer in Tuscany is a wonderful place for wine lovers (and for those who just enjoy a good glass or two) because this is when the grapes are harvested – you can really taste the vino in
the air.

Chianti is produced just south of Florence and Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano are made to the south east of Siena. These are spectacular cities – I should include Lucca in the list – and the wines are delicious, but I prefer something from the other end of Tuscany, where the crowds are smaller and the cellars are quieter.

You won’t mind the drive from the north, especially if you’re in something to really enjoy the Italian roads. Villa Casanova, a deluxe country house in the beautiful Val D’Orcia in Siena, makes a perfect base for such an adventure. Villa Belvedere close to Florence is another recommendation.

Maremma is one of my favourite places. Situated on the southern Tuscany coast, it is
something of a hidden treasure. The region has a reputation for incredible wines and its Super Tuscans are famous the world over (and not just for their prices tags). One of these wines is Sassicaia, considered one of Italy’s best Bordeaux-style red wines (a 1988 vintage will set you back the best part of €3,000).

As well as the wine, Maremma is beautiful to explore, from the fishing village of Castiglione della Pescaia with its proud castle, to Massa Marittima with its quaint cobblestones and medieval streets. It really is a special region and writing this post has got me wanting to return there right away!
